Water Scarcity β†’ Food Loss Calculator

Estimate crop production loss from reduced irrigation water and water stress, plus downstream impacts in tons of food, value, and optional calories.

This is a planning model (not a hydrology model). For detailed basin analysis, pair with local ET, reservoir, and allocation data.

Inputs Baseline vs Scarcity

Enter your water scarcity scenario

Start with baseline annual production and baseline irrigation water volume. Then apply a reduction in irrigation supply and (optionally) a water-stress yield penalty.

Total output for the crop system being modeled.
We’ll convert to metric tons internally when needed.
Total delivered irrigation water over the year.
We convert to mΒ³ internally for calculations.

Example: reservoirs/allocation down 25%.
If water drops 25% and elasticity is 0.8, yield drops ~20% (before stress penalty).
Extra loss from heat/wilting/salinity beyond irrigation reduction.
Drip irrigation, scheduling, mulching, drought varieties, etc.

Used to estimate economic loss (same currency).
Staple default; adjust for crop type (e.g., vegetables are much lower).
Some percentages were out of range and were clamped to valid limits.
Model logic: production change β‰ˆ (water change Γ— elasticity) + stress penalty βˆ’ adaptation offset. This is intentionally transparent and easy to explain in a report.
